Pawson makes super start to life as a Wanderer

dubaiwandererscc

New signing Danny Pawson started his Wanderers career off in style on Sunday as he smashed a stylish and sublime century on debut.

Opening the batting on Sunday in game 2 of DSL Division 3, the left handed Pawson soon got into his stride early with some clean strikes through the on and off side. He then showed his abilities all around the wicket when spin was introduced and eventually brought up his 100 from just 64 balls with another huge six over midwicket, the first ever DSL century from a Wanderer.

It was a seriously hot afternoon in the desert and, having only been in the country five days after his move from the west of England, the heat finally took its toll and Pawson's innings ended on 112 from just 73 balls, an innings that included nine fours and seven maximums.

His performance helped the 2ndXI post a challenging 192-8. Captain Cameron Coles (18) and young Caleb McLaren (10) made crucial contributions.

In reply, a strong Samaa TV batting line up made an electric star. However, the introduction of spinners Ivaashan Nair, McLaren and another teenager Kushaan Sainani stemmed the run flow and with it brought wickets.

Sainani bowled five tight overs for just 28 runs and McLaren claimed 4-33 in his quota with his ever impressive left arm wrist spin.

This meant the game was on a knife edge but with just seven balls to spare Samaa claimed the victory for the loss of five wickets.

The 2ndXI return to action against Solar Winds on Sunday, 1pm start at The Sevens Stadium

On Saturday, the 1st XI had a day to forget against an extremely strong Sevens District side that, reeling from defeat last week, had 17 players to choose from at the toss which their skipper duly won and invited Wanderers to bat first.

The innings got off to a reasonable start with openers Jack Luffman and Clint Berkenshaw looking comfortable as they posted an opening stand of 37 before the latter was caught at point for 15 after skying an attempted lofted drive. Partner Luffman took the score past the 50 run mark with a huge six but lost his wicket next ball for 24 and, in truth, form that point the Wadneerrs batitng lien up came up short against an impressive spin attack that was backed up in the field well. Brannon Varley scored a workmanlike 22 to try get his side to a competitive score but it wasn't to be as the Wanderers were bowled out for just 110.

Any hope of a surprise victory was dashed almost immediately as opener Wajid Khan came out all guns blazing scoring 60 from just 31 balls before Abdullah Kayani claimed his wicket thanks to a good catch from 1stXI debutant Ben Quirk. Fellow spinner Avi Karia bowled tidily but the winning line was crossed in just the 11 overs.

The 1stXI travel to Ajman on Saturday afternoon to take on Shahram CC looking to bounce back straight away, 1pm start.
