The Wanderers claimed the club’s first win in in the DSL9 on Friday with a 25-run victory over the established TCC.
Despite the 7.30am start, the heat and humidity had not abated, and it was a fine all round effort from the Wanderers batting line up to post a very challenging 207-6. Skipper Adams made just one change from the previous week’s team with 15-year-old all rounder Zain Rana coming in for the unavailable Will Parkinson. This meant a new partner for Jack Luffman at the top of the innings in the shape of wicket-keeper Ben Willgoss.
It proved a master stroke from the selection committee as the pair put on 74 for the first wicket in just nine overs. While small in stature, Willgoss is a live wire of a character and his busy approach at the crease and the pair’s excellent running between the wickets put immediate pressure on the TCC bowlers and fielders. Luffman was the more aggressive of the two using his strong leg side play to full effect.
Willgoss was stumped for a well-crafted 28. This brought youngster Ethan Dsouza to the crease and together with his more experienced partner, the pair continued to pressurise the TCC attack and put on 61 in the next eight overs before they both lost their wickets. Dsouza had made a fine 34 before nicking off to the wicket keeper and Luffman was bowled going for another big shot. He has amassed 60 from 45 overs in what was searing heat and had laid the platform for the powerhouse of a middle order, that didn’t disappoint. Club coach Clint Berkenshaw cracked 18 from just nine balls and Sid Jhurani, last week’s top performer with the ball, showed his all-round abilities with an aggressive 36 from 24 balls to push his side beyond the magical 200 mark.
Wanderers knew they wouldn’t have it all their own way and so it proved as the TCC top order set about the chase in positive fashion. However, the pacey and deserving Kamran Shaheen bowled with speed and aggression and was able to remove both openers inside the power play. From that juncture, the spin twins of Jhurani and Avi Karia gradually built the pressure on the TCC line up and chipped away at the wickets. Jhurani was again impressive wand went for just 30 runs from his five overs and was unlucky not to claim a wicket. However, his tight spell allowed Karia, who has a lovely action, to bowl his off-spin with variation and he picked up his, and Wanderers’, first ever five wicket haul at this level. He was well supported by keeper Willgoss who took a fine stumping and a catch, as well as Berkenshaw who took two good catches in the deep. Karia would finally finish with figures of 5-42 which earned him the DSL Player of the Match award.
TCC weren’t done though and some late order hitting did put pressure on the Wanderers’ bowling attack but Ashley Connick (1-15) and then the returning Berkenshaw and Nav Naidoo (2-16) put the flames out on any TCC victory with some tight death bowling and claim a memorable and impressive win for the new Wanderers side. Willgoss finished with another tidy catch and Berkenshaw eventually claimed three outfield catches.
Wanderers take on Masters Cricket Club Reds on Friday, 1.30pm start @ The Sevens Stadium.
