Wanderers edged out by Exiles

Dubai Wanderers completed the Fab four stage with a 15 run defeat at the hands of Exiles on Saturday.

Injuries, illness and work commitments meant that there were no less than six changes to the Wanderers line-up from the previous week and, despite the loss, the Club hierarchy were delighted with the performance and the depth shown to the ever increasing squad.

Clint Berkenshaw took up the captaincy reins for the day and handed club debuts to Mohamed Amjed, Umair Sidduqui and Nujan Naushad and a DSL debut to Aaron Cornish.

All four played their part in helping to bowl Exiles out for 168. Cornish was first in on the act with a fine catch in the deep off the bowling of Thinus Steyn before claiming two wickets for himself and then Amjed, bowling both off and leg spin, claimed his first club wicket via a super catch in the deep form Club Chairman Jack Luffman.

Captain Berkenshaw led from the front with the ball claiming 2 -16 from his allotted overs and was also impressive in with a high energy fielding performance and numerous bowling changes. Steyn again stepped up to the plate with the ball and took 2-33 from his overs.

On a wicket that was beginning to tire, the chase was never going to be straightforward and the early loss of Ben Willgoss didn't help proceedings. However, a second wicket stand of 60 between Luffman and Will Parkinson ensued. It wasn't a quick stand but one which had certainly laid a foundation for the middle order to launch an attack on the Exiles' total. However, the less than fluent Luffman lost his wicket, adjudged LBW for 23, and then the crucial wicket of Berkenshaw followed when he nibbled a delivery behind and again the Wanderers were up against it. However, her from the previous encounter Ash Connick fought fire with fire with a quickfire 15 including one big six and Parkinson looked set for his maiden half century before being well caught on the long on boundary for a well crafted 45. Cameos from Amjed (16 from 12) and a run a ball 22 form Steyn kept Wanderers in the hunt but it was ultimately all in vein.

Friday sees the sides meet each other again in the DSL Eliminator Final , 8am start at the Sevens Stadium.

Will Parkinson topped scored for the Wanderers with an impressive 45.

Aaron Cornish marked his DSL debut with the Wanderer of the Day award for his brace of wickets and fine catch. He is pictured receiving his Hyperama voucher form Club Chairman Jack Luffman.
