The Wanderers claimed back to back DSL 9 wins on Friday with an empathic 116 run victory over Masters Reds at the Sevens Stadium.

There were two changes made to the Wanderers sides with club captain Dave Adams and batter Ethan Dsouza unavailable, so in came Will Parkinson and all-rounder Thinus Steyn for his club debut. The side was led by Nav Naidoo and his first job was to win the toss, which he duly did, and elected to bat first in blistering hot conditions once again.

Openers Jack Luffman and Ben Willgoss started proceedings once again and had made another positive start putting on 31 in just four overs before Luffman, hampered somewhat by a quad injury, lost his wicket for 19 (14 balls). Willgoss wasn’t far behind him after dragging a wide delivery onto his stumps for 12 and Wanderers were then a in a little bit of trouble at 61-3 at the end of the eight over powerplay.

This brought together Clint Berkenshaw and Parkinson and together they rebuilt the innings with some super running between the wickets as the pitch began to get lower and slower which made shot making a little trickier. Parkinson made an important 23 form 19 balls before holing out in the deep and then when Berkenshaw looked to be unleashing, he had hit three huge sixes before he too played on for an aggressive 37 from 29 balls. The innings was again now well poised at 161-6 with nine overs left. What the Wanderers middle order showed was that they had learnt from the opening day fixture and thanks to a calm and assured innings from Ash Connick, and impressive partnerships with Steyn and Kamran Shaheen, the score again went passed the 200 mark. Firstly, Connick and Steyn took the opportunities to find the gaps and ran well between the wickets to share stand of 38 which then allowed Shaheen to get into super aggressive mode and he smashed 32 not out form just 17 balls, hitting three fours and one six. Connick finished 28 not out from 27 and the partnership was worth an unbeaten 43 in just four overs to help the side post 207-7.

As always, the Wanderers bowling attack wanted to get into their work early and they certainly came up trumps for skipper Naidoo, who himself set the tone with two excellent opening overs where he was unlucky not to claim a wicket. However, he need not have worried, as Shaheen backed up his batting with three overs of quick in-swing bowling claiming two wickets along the way. Berkenshaw too had the bit between his teeth and after replacing his captain, ripped through the Reds’ middle order with a fine display of fast bowling taking 3-8 from his three overs, clean bowling two of the batters.

The heat was still ramping up, so Naidoo switched his attack around and none disappointed and were well backed up by the Wanderers fielders who were excellent, led superbly by wicket keeper Ben Willgoss. He executed a fine stumping off the bowling of Avinash Karia who again showed control and guile taking 2-5, and he now sits top of the league wicket takers. Sid Jhurani claimed a wicket and it was left to Steyn to complete a fine debut as he took the final two wickets to fall to finish with 2-13 and bowl Reds out for 91 to claim a 116 run victory.

It was an impressive, all round team performance from the Wanderers and takes them into second place in the league standings. Clint Berkenshaw was named the DSL Player of the Match while Kamran Shahaeen took the Wanderer of the Day accolade, sponsored by Hyperama.

The Wanderers face Desert Kings on Saturday, 1pm start @ The Sevens Stadium

Club coach Clint Berkenshaw took the DSL Player of the Match award for his 37 form 29 balls and 3-8 with the ball. He was pushed close by Kamran Shaheen who took 2-10 after smashing 32form 17 balls.
